@meg.beacon: The loneliest I’ve ever been was 3:33am, holding a sleeping baby in a dark house. On paper, it doesn’t make much sense. How can you feel lonely when you’re holding the person you love most in the world? But I think a lot of moms will understand exactly what I mean. Because loneliness in motherhood isn’t about being physically alone. It’s about carrying so much that nobody else can see. The mental load. The broken sleep. The constant worrying. The pressure you put on yourself to get everything right. At 3:33am, the house was silent. My baby was finally asleep on my chest. I should have felt relieved. Instead, I just felt… overwhelmed. The kind of overwhelmed that only comes after days, or weeks, of interrupted sleep. The kind where your body is desperate for rest, but your mind won’t stop racing. I remember looking around the room and thinking that everyone else must be asleep. That everyone else had somehow figured this motherhood thing out. Then I opened the map. And I saw light after light after light. Each dot was another mom awake just like me. Feeding. Rocking. Pumping. Cuddling a baby back to sleep. Trying to make it through another long night. It didn’t change the fact that I was exhausted. It didn’t magically make Riley sleep through. But it changed something inside me. I wasn’t the only one awake. I wasn’t the only one finding this hard. I wasn’t the only mom wondering if she was doing enough. And somehow, that made the darkness feel a little less lonely. If you’re reading this in the middle of the night, I hope you know something.
