For many Indigenous Peoples, Canada Day is also a reminder of a history that includes displacement, residential schools, and policies intended to erase cultures and languages. This video isn’t about telling anyone not to celebrate. It’s about making room for empathy. Understanding someone else’s perspective doesn’t require agreeing with everything they believe. It simply asks us to acknowledge that two people can experience the same day very differently. Patriotism and honesty can exist together. As much as I do celebrate Canada Day I also realize what we did to the indigenous people. My husband is Metis and comes from a long line of prominent indigenous chiefs. So I do both, celebrate that I live in this great country and stand with the indigenous people.

I’m First Nations from British Columbia. Born and raised in the city. I grew up celebrating Canada Day because that’s what the schools taught us. They didn’t teach us the what really happened. I have mixed feelings for this day but am proud to be Canadian.
