“My daughter had no mother, so whenever she wanted anything, she would find a way herself.” A tourist charged with murdering a Thai teenager was filmed giving a strange statement to her family which included a plea to “tell other girls to be careful”. Simon Carman, 45, met Tunchanok Donhomla, 17, in the early hours of Thursday on a beach in Jomtien, Pattaya, an area known for sex tourism. Police believe Mr Carman, an Australian, had initially agreed to pay the teen - known as “little cake” to her family - 1,000 baht (£20), but when they got back to the hotel he tried to barter the amount down to £10. This, he claimed, led to a violent exchange where the teenager held a knife to his throat. Mr Carman and Miss Donhomla were seen on video walking hand in hand to his hotel at 3.30am. Around six hours later, just before 10pm, CCTV caught Mr Carman dragging a suitcase out of the building and leaving with it on a motorcycle. He then returned to the hotel, without the suitcase, at 10.06pm. A suitcase was later discovered near a railway line with officers seen opening it on national television, to reportedly reveal Miss Donhomla’s naked body inside. The teenager’s family had reported her missing around 5pm. A warrant was issued for Mr Carman’s arrest, and he was stopped trying to board a plane at Bangkok Airport. Local police are reported as saying Mr Carman denied killing the teenager, though some media reports suggest he later admitted it. In a video taken while he was in custody, Mr Carman tells Miss Donhomla’s family that he “feels bad for what happened to your daughter” but suggests “it was out of my control”. “I hope you, I know you will be very sad, upset, same-same, me. It shouldn’t happen and I hope you’re ok. I know you're not. Please tell other girls to be careful.” Carman faces multiple charges, including intentional homicide, taking and transporting a minor, and destroying a corpse. If found guilty, he could face the death penalty or life in prison. In a tearful interview outside a police station in Pattaya, Miss Donhomla’s dad Thongchai Donholmla, said: “I am deeply saddened. My daughter had no mother, so whenever she wanted anything, she would find a way herself, and she always helped me too.”
