They are being taken advantage of. I hope the government steps in and creates better circumstances and conditions for them.

There’s a comment on the video that says 10k rupees is only 75 USD. Which means he would have lost $250 when he was only being paid $75 to begin with.

Unbelievably slapdash of Himalayan Traverse Adventure. Totally focused on meeting the letter of the guidelines to avoid fines at the cost of client and guide safety. Makes you wonder if they were facing a guide shortage in the first place because people didn’t want to work with them. I hope the DoT and NMA/TAAN come down hard and think about how to prevent the patterns that led to this outcome in future. I’m sure HTA isn’t the only expedition operator moving like this — it always “works out fine” until it doesn’t.

given a choice that dont feel much like a choice. this is a great example of the power dynamics between the climbers and the guides and their superiors. a cook turned guide should not be responsible for the price of a oxygen tank.

he better get that pay for every day he was up there, like that scumbag company promised. that and more. what the hell, there should never have been a disincentive for losing those bottles, that can make the difference in someone making a life saving decision if they are trying to keep that in mind while not even having expected to be up there in the first place! I'm filled with rage. I'm so glad he's alive, but being alive should have been a given for him the whole way through!

A bit of a long one, but tour companies using guides with no experience is the reason some people have died in the mountain. In 2024, Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui was trying to summit without supplemental oxygen. He didn’t make it, died 800m from the summit. His Sherpa Nawang Sherpa has never been found. When Kirui’s friend went to Nepal to extend condolences to the Sherpa’s family, he found out the Sherpa had actually never been to the summit.

I would like to know what the company plans to do for him. They really let him down by not sending a rescue. They didn’t even try! They should be doing something big for him because of their failure.

Typical that the companies were taking climbers money, but didn't have enough Sherpas for them all.
