Faithless (2000) is a Swedish psychological drama written by Ingmar Bergman and loosely based on Bergman’s own real-life experiences with infidelity. The film explores the destructive, rippling consequences of an extramarital affair on a family, framed as a memory being unpacked by an aging artist.
The film opens on the isolated island of Fårö, where an elderly writer named Bergman sits alone. To help him write his next script, he conjures the spirit/muse of an actress named Marianne. Together, they reconstruct and dissect the painful story of her past.
The Affair
In the flashbacks, Marianne is happily married to a successful orchestra conductor, Markus, and they have a young daughter, Isabelle. Their lives change when Markus's best friend, a theater director named David, enters the picture.
What starts as playful, platonic flirting quickly escalates. While Markus is away on tour, Marianne and David meet up in Paris and begin a passionate, intense affair.
