All you have to do is mention 1-2 other things you think are more urgent and ask them how they’d prioritize the 3 things. They give you the answer, easy.

I’m with you on pushing back but 1. Often it is urgent to that person based on their org’s priorities but not urgent to me or my org’s priorities. Misalignment at the top of the house is usually what drives these issues and not easily solved without escalation. 2. If you give people a week, they’ll see it’s not urgent, do nothing and forget all about it. People are overwhelmed.

I like when an occasional emergency requires my help. It's a nice shake up and a little adrenaline boost, which is pretty rare as an accountant. And let's be honest, there are no true emergencies in accounting.

i dont look at it until someone pings me or calls me. even then, unless the manager that gave me the task comes to my desk and tells me exactly what needs to be done, no details of the context spared, im continuing whatever im doing first. it can wait.

Agree and if the person can’t articulate the importance or urgency, you can always hit them with “I’ll put your name down as approver for the reprioritization. We will review your decision at the next steerco, please be ready to talk about your decision” and watch the reaction lol. Only to be used as a last resort.
