@aviationhighlights: Making its very welcomed UK debut at the Shuttleworth Collection's Festival of Flight Air Show 2026 was this stunning Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4. The aircraft was restored to airworthy condition in 2023 and is based in Germany - registered as D-FEML. Unlike the Hispano Buchons we're used to seeing at UK air shows (the Spanish-licenced built, Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered versions), this 109 runs its original engine, the Daimler-Benz DB 601Aa. It also saw action on the Eastern Front before crash landing on 24th January 1942 after suffering damage from a Soviet Air Force Hawker Hurricane. She is the first 109 'Emil' variant to fly in the UK since 2018 when the Biggin Hill-based White 14 returned to the sky; although, sadly, that hasn't managed another flight since. Flown by Charlie Brown, it is believed this Bf 109 will be a display exclusive to The Shuttleworth Collection this year.

I saw an Emil on static display in the Deutsche Museum in Munich. I was struck by how small it was. It seemed like a pilot wouldn’t get in as much as he “put it on”. Smallest airframe wrapped around largest available engine.
