The woman reclining on the bed is Venus, the goddess of love. She gazes into a mirror held by her son, Cupid. The painting was created in 17th-century Spain by Diego Velázquez, court painter to the king. At the time, religious authorities in Spain strongly discouraged both the creation and possession of nude paintings. This work was commissioned in secret and painted in Italy. Its first owner, a Spanish nobleman, reportedly hung it in his private bedroom and invited only a select few guests to view it. In Spain at that time, using nude models was considered highly taboo. One theory suggests that the model was Velázquez's lover, and that her reflection was intentionally blurred to conceal her identity. Another suggests that the artist wanted viewers to imagine their own ideal beauty in the mirror. More than 250 years after the painting became public, it eventually found a home in a London museum. Then, a shocking incident occurred. A women's rights activist attacked the painting with a meat cleaver, slashing the canvas multiple times. For generations, the painting had been displayed for the pleasure of male viewers. Now, it became a symbol of protest—a way for women to demand rights and recognition in a society that denied them both. But there is another mystery hidden in the painting. At first glance, Venus seems to be looking at her own reflection. Yet if we can see the face in the mirror, then Venus cannot actually be looking at herself. She is looking at the painter. And she is looking at us. Just when we think we are secretly observing her, we realize that she is staring back. It is a brilliant device that pulls the viewer into the painting itself. Who commissioned the work? Who was the model? And what, exactly, is Venus looking at? The answers remain unknown. What kind of "ideal face" do you see in that mirror? Welcome to Art's Secret Garden.
