I have a similar story. My Gt Grandfathers brother uncle Johnny had some kind of learning disability, he lived with my Gt grandfather until he married and then lived with my Gt Grandparents all his life and was classed as “feeble minded” on the censuses, he helped my gt gran with the kids at home (they had 10) as he couldn’t work and he was so loved. His disability was mild and he could function. They lived in miles platting, off Oldham rd. in 1931 Ghandi came to visit MCR, he was passing down Oldham rd with dignitary’s in an open topped vehicle and people lined the streets to catch a glimpse, uncle Johnny who was by then 49 shouted out and asked Ghandi if he wanted to swap a football card (he collected these cards, maybe what children collected at the time), he was immediately taken from the crowd by the police. He was sent to a place called Calderdales in Clitheroe, and at the time, an institution for the mentally ill, like prestwich in this video, he never saw the light of day ever again and died in there 😓 my gran, her mother and siblings went to visit every Sunday on the bus but they were only allowed in the grounds, in all weathers, it must have been a struggle but they went as they missed and loved uncle Johnny. On the 1939 register he is listed as an inmate at Calderdales and his occupation was general labourer, his disability wasn’t extreme or caused him not to be able to function normally and it is heartbreaking that this sort of thing happened, he is buried in the church next to the site like on this video, all them people who were loved and meant something to people😓. The site was still functioning like prestwich until not long ago and was classed as a learning disability hospital. John Graham ❤️🙏🏻 you are not forgotten ❤️🙏🏻
