It doesn't really show privilege is invisible for those who have it. I discussed with my 6 year old that next year we are not going on a holiday but we are doing some outings. He liked that idea and kept insisting that I needed to really save up for that. Because to him it should be more expensive And when I was a kid my parents divorced and eventhough we went from middle class to lower class, I fully believed we were rich all of a sudden because we had cookies at home after that. It is not simply that privilege is invisible, but more about how they interpret the worth of something.

but that is also because you are not traumatizing her with money issues. I remember as a kid stressed about groceries because I heard my parents fighting all the time about money. I love them, but there are certain things you don't need to hear. Not buying a toy fine, but regarding food ? I took me so much to get over the scarcity feeling !

thank you for telling her. as a poor kid it was always so awkward having to navigate my classmates thinking their summers were standard while i had to explain that my big trip of the summer was a 2-hour-drive shopping day trip.

I remember being TERRIFIED to ask my parents if I could go to a 5 day camp because it was $300+. So thankful they made it work- still some of my best childhood memories!

In Sweden kids can go to summer camp arranged by the municipality. The more the parents make the higher the fee. The most expensive in Stockholm is 50usd/day and the cheapest is 0/day. Everything is included - food, councelers, activities, room and so on
