@therealkatiemcmanus: love doing things alone. Going to dinner, the movies, traveling, you name it. There's no feeling quite like the freedom of being the ONLY person you have to check in with in order to do EXACTLY what you want. I get to decide which restaurant will make me happiest, which film I'm in the mood for, and if I want to have a lazy day by a pool, or venture off into the city to discover random museums off the beaten path. And it's exhilarating to know that if and when something goes wrong (because let's be real... things do go wrong)- I trust myself to figure it out. And it's even better when I'm not actually alone- but have my dog Luna along for the ride. Because she forces me to stop and notice things I wouldn't normally notice. People want to come up and say hi to her, which reminds me how kind and loving people are at their core. Whenever I tell people of my solo adventures I get responses like "Oh, I could never.", "Isn't it lonely?", "Don't you ever feel uncomfortable?", and my favorite "I'd be too afraid to do that all by myself...". They call be brave, but I don't feel brave... I feel free. And I am. I'm the first woman in my lineage to live her whole life with the right to a bank account and credit cards in my own name, without the need of a male family member to sign off on it. I'm the first woman in my lineage to live my whole life with the right to bodily autonomy in my country (until four years ago). I now just stick to the states where my rights are protected. I'm the first woman in my lineage to start a business where I serve clients worldwide- ranging from Autralia to Saudi Arabia. And I'm the first woman in my lineage to run for public office... even though I lost by 54 votes. I've been gifted with a profound level of freedom that my female ancestors could only dream of. And I see it as my duty to enjoy those freedoms to the fullest. And it's my goal to show anyone and everyone who's paying attention that if I can do it- you can do it too.
