I recall that when they were restoring the audio of Doctor Who episodes fans had recorded off the TV the audio would speed up and slow down and not match the known length of the show. They were able to use the hum to resync the audio and I think they used it to resync filmed copies.

That’s quite cool, it’s like tree rings but you can track time to the minute not just the season.
