It’s like when we greet in Zulu we say “Sawubona” or “Sanibona” literally meaning “We see you” or “We see you all”, acknowledging not just their presence but their shared buntu-ness. Translating it to just “Hello” will always be insufficient. And that’s why we get really offended when someone doesn’t greet us, it’s a dismissal of our humanity.
