Rothko's stuff seems low effort and useless until you try it yourself. Basquiat's seems low effort and useless because it is

Same with Jackson Pollock, I don’t like him but it’s been proven by mathematicians that he wasn’t just dripping the paint all willy nilly.

I love the idea that Rothko and pollack are foils of each other. One knew the chemistry like no other, the other used whatever he had and didn’t care that the works eroded due to incompatible chemistries. And both are thought to be “easy” and something anyone could do it.

i saw photos of Rothkos and i didnt get it. then i saw this one in person and i understood everything. i was deep in my first situationship, the first person i'd fallen in love with, and this painting was exactly how i felt every time i thought of her

I think there's a huge problem with modern and contemporary art especially where folks criticize without ever having seen the piece in person and to view through a screen flattens art enormously and removes so much sensory and contextual impact

technique is cool, the composition is still boring and uninspired.

its cool that he made the colors. that doesn't make his paintings interesting

something can be technically impressive and still not interesting to look at. You can admire his dedication and craft and still acknowledge that it won't appeal to the average person as "art".

I knew that about Rothko before I saw one of his paintings in person, but now I know that photos/prints can't capture just how unique and unusual his "homemade" paints are in reality. I can absolutely see how someone would think it was easy if they'd never seen one up close or even in the same room.

Oh I'm sorry I didn't realize I needed to source all the ingredients. Do I have to make my own paper too?

I guess but it still begs the question of why a solid color of it and not a scene or something? so the process of the paint itself is the art?

I think it’s funny to see people criticize and complain about providing context about an abstract piece as if art and design is not also a form of research and discovery in itself

while Rothko's paintings are not for me, there was an extreme technical aspect that I have to respect as an artist.

hello, I only paint miniatures and let me tell you. you definitely can achieve literally any colour and saturation and consistency with existing paints and inks. anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

rothko makes people so mad. like “i could do this” but you didn’t. like please be my guest and try it and have it mean the same thing. like if you could have painted a rothko you would have painted a rothko

I absolutely understand people who don’t care for Rothko. But to me his paintings are pure emotion made manifest, and I love them for that.

Lots of stuff is hard. Doesn’t make it good art.

The thing is that people find meaning where they look for it. I might not be able to mathematically replicate his color mastery, but if I genuinely dedicated myself to putting color on canvas, and it ended up being displayed somewhere, there would be a crowd of people defending the depth of feeling my art created simply by seeing it. I don’t have to be Rothko to create a Rothko and that’s actually the point of art. Arguing artistic exceptionalism is actually more of a point *against* Rothko than you realize
