In Norway this is all written down in law. Everyone has the same notice periods, regardless of line of work or contract. I’m sure there might be exceptions, but those are very rare. Handing in your notice is pretty much final.

Why are people still giving notice? It’s not like the company would tell you 4 weeks ahead of time if you were being fired. If they don’t give employees that courtesy, employees have no reason to give employers it.

In the uk, there’s laws about what you can and can’t say in a work reference btw. I had a former employer that both lied in their work reference for me and also filled it mostly with personal opinions instead of work stats. He got into a lot of troubles and I ended up with a legal document informing future employers that they couldn’t request a reference from him due to him braking the law.
