Flipside of this story: I recently left a job on amicable terms, and it was actually kind of tough to leave, even with a 20% raise. When the owner/CEO found out I was leaving, she walked to my desk, and slapped a hand-written note down that said: "[My name], No! Sincerely, [CEO's name]" Of course, we had a laugh, and she wished me the best in my future endeavors. I kept the note, and I will continue to keep it as a reminder of an actual non-toxic workplace.

Why are people still giving notice? It’s not like the company would tell you 4 weeks ahead of time if you were being fired. If they don’t give employees that courtesy, employees have no reason to give employers it.
