@adam_nowhere: Mecca — 570 CE. (Episode 1: The Year of the Elephant) Abraha’s army approaches the Kaaba with an elephant at the front. According to the traditional accounts, Nufayl whispered to the elephant… and it refused to move toward the sanctuary. #History #IslamicHistory #Mecca #Islam #مكة Pi
In 570 CE, Abraha, an Aksumite ruler based in Yemen, advanced on Mecca to destroy the Kaaba, but the lead elephant, Mahmud, refused to move toward the sanctuary. The Qur’an recalls this as the story of the “People of the Elephant” in Surah al-Fil 105. Ibn Ishaq/Ibn Hisham and later Ibn Kathir give the detailed scene: Nufayl takes the elephant’s ear, tells it to kneel or turn back, and the animal refuses to advance. Abraha is also confirmed by South Arabian inscriptions as a real 6th-century ruler who led campaigns in Arabia.
