@the.mindful.gamer: Loss of Physical Media...Help Me Understand. I just never had an attachment to things like that. #physicalmediamatters #physicalmedia #gaming
Because with digital games you do not own them. You own licenses and those licenses can go away at any time and you no longer own the game. It’s really simple. Even if you don’t collect physical players should have a choice.

The moment physical is gone, they will price the games at $80 and keep it at 80, with no discounts…

Its because of game perseveration. Youre a younging in 20 years when you fire up the old PS5 to play a game and it says you cant, then youll realize. My 10 year old niece loves Metroid. She went bonkers when I pulled out the old SNES and Super metroid.

Your experience is actually a perfect starting point. You don't remember what it was like when physical media was everything. The entire landscape has changed and they've slowly been taking away your material connection to things so that you need them to access it. If they stop producing physical games, they can permanently lock games behind DRM, they could stop selling them and just make you rent or stream them through their own services. You are the end result of decades of shitty business practices and they will take advantage of your perspective and your experience to manufacture the consent to do this. You not having physical media is apart of a long term strategy which will ultimately gatekeep games from us.

you see that copy of jump force you have, that's litteraly the only legal way to play the game as it has been delisted from online stores that's exactly where the problem is

anyone with a PC needs to step out the conversation, they lost this fight yeeaars ago and set this up to eventually happen on consoles too

the main issue is when you lose the ability to buy elsewhere, they control the prices. you can go to Walmart and buy GOW Ragnarok for 27 dollars, but on PSN it's the full 60. aside from that, when they decide to turn off the storefront, all those games are just gone. you can't buy them anymore. you can't play them anymore. it's just over. I don't buy a ton of physical media either, but the complete lack of things means you don't "own" your games anymore. it's bad business all for the sake of earning more shareholders money at the expense of the consumer

Jump force? You mean the game that was delisted and the only way you can buy is physical now

Shit take man if we don’t have physical copy’s we don’t own anything they can take your games away at any time just like Sony did with all those movies recently

People are under the misconception that physical media still implies ownership. That is no longer the case and those people are just now coming to terms with the idea of not owning what they buy.

it sets a precedance of how much corpos can squeeze and wring you dry without letting you have anything 'sustainable'. Recent news and plans are games industry pivoting to streaming plans where you constantly pay mthly subscriptions to play games across cloud instead of being able to save money and replay your old paid games. They want you constantly paying and not owning anything. imagine paying for something already, and when you want to reuse it, you'd have to pay again and it isn't a form of upkeep cost at all

Others have made the ownership argument, justly so, but what my wife pointed out is this hurts communal resources. Libraries often have a surprisingly robust library of games you can borrow(depending on the library) but if disks disappear in 2028, that option has a shelf life now

shifting from the ownership argument - I did not have a lot of money for games growing up, either. I got to play a lot of games I wouldnt have normally because my friends and I would swap physical cartridges or disc's. I could also rent physical games from my local store, and even today, physical games can be borrowed through many libraries. its not just about ownership; its about access. it also destroys the secondary market - so no more taking that game to your local game store to trade for the $1]-$15 towards a new game (or buying a second hand cheaper copy).

The_Nay :
If you sell a console that has a disc drive then you need to support disc for the duration of that console lifecycle. Those who like to collect physical media purchased a console that allows them to do so. If Sony wants to no longer support physical games then they need to make the transition during the next console cycle. If a game is released for PS5 then it needs to physical release.

You said you traded in those games for buy other games. That is ownership. You can't do that now with digital content.
You pay for something you should be able to own it.

For me it's mostly about control. On pc you still get the choice of several storefronts to buy from. But on playstation you will only be able to buy from what is today the most expensive vendor. And once they're the only one, it will get even more expensive

The license being revocable at any time is the biggest downside. Like some people have already lost access to certain movies/shows on psn cuz they lost the rights

Earthen :
this is the reason. Just earlier this week, people lost content they paid for. Anti consumer. As someone who likes to own a physical disc or book or Blu-ray to put on a shelf and have access to for ever, if not me then my kids or people I leave behind can have a window into what I enjoyed if they choose. Also, we can at least sell it on or trade a disc, or VHS, or cassette, or vinyl… physical media is king. They can pry it from my cold dead fingers.

i personally feel it's more so the fear of that if you "own" your games digitally the companies can revoke your access to playing the game but if you have a physical copy that fear isn't there since you own the game. Similarly to physical copies of movie compared to streaming/buying it digitally.
