some homeless shelters and hostels actually cost money so a lot are collecting change trying to save for that. maybe he was full and didn't need anything to eat, but wanted money for later or the next day. I think it makes complete sense to try and get money whenever you can if you're homeless

yk the one thing I find is that nobody says no to chocolate or a sweet treat. So many people like homeless people are unable to afford the little things that feel like comfort so even if I don’t have money, nobody would ever decline chocolate

there’s nowhere to store things you don’t need if you’re homeless, and people do sometimes tamper with food/drink they’re giving to homeless people so many won’t accept it. could’ve needed cash for a shelter, could’ve been for drgs (obviously not all homeless people are addicts but it shouldn’t matter if that’s what they are gonna spend it on, withdrawals are hell and sometimes fatal so I’ll never judge anyone if that’s what they are buying), could’ve simply wanted a small amount of autonomy to be able to buy what they wanted themselves

food and water is probably the easiest thing they can get. drugs is definitely one option for why they would want cash but they could also need that money to get into a shelter or hotel for the night, or to buy genuine medicine that they’re too embarrassed to ask for

Think if you were in their position, how embarrassing it is to go and beg people for cash so you can buy things you want. Most people carry card and offer food and water, pleasures like cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs are stuff is highly judged by the public despite those same ppl doing coke or alcohol too. If it wasn’t that, it might have been to trade with other ppl for things u can’t get at a gas station (blankets gloves heat items etc) or for money to pay for the shelter

Homeless people are allowed to say no to donations, its not a personal thing. They may have felt embarrassed, or had already eaten enough, or needed dog food, or blankets/pillows, or money for a shelter, or to pay off a lime bike *i think thats the name*, or maybe theyre an alcoholic who was about to/had started withdrawal and needed alcohol to keep living, or maybe they wanted something to help them sleep (drugs, alcohol, sleeping tablets), or maybe they owed someone something, or they needed to get a prescription/needed tablets like hay-fever tablets, maybe they needed the bus or a taxi etc, maybe they just wanted some spare coins to have that security to afford bus fare or water or smthing if they needed it, maybe they were begging for another homeless person and they werent aware of the 2nds food allergies (so couldn't accept any food for them), or maybe they were suffering from some kind of mental health problem *like a delusion, or an OCD compulsion etc* and needed the money to help it *their hallucination/delusion may have called for it, or the compulsion may have involved handling coins*. There are many reasons a homeless person may say no

They usually want money for alcohol, drugs or sometimes for a shelter, if it's after 10pm though it won't be for a shelter as most close their doors at that time, but they could be saving money to get themselves a room in a B&B for the night

they may want money rather than food or water because they need to pay for somewhere to get shelter for the night and have a shower or they might want money for drugs or booze or theres people that pretend to be homeless just for money although the last one is rarer
