@lets.journeyto: The reopening of the National Museum! Columbus' Anchor???On August 2nd, 1498, Christopher Columbus anchored at the southwestern tip of Trinidad at a point he named Punta del Arenal which is modern-day Icacos. His account of the voyage, preserved through historian Bartolomé de las Casas, records him ordering his anchors dropped there. One was lost that night in the Gulf of Paria. In 1877, workers digging a drain on the Constance Estate at Icacos struck metal buried 200 feet inland. Photographs were sent to geographical societies in London, Paris, and Rome. All certified it as authentic 15th-century construction. It was later exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in 1912 was officially gifted to the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Is it definitively Columbus's anchor? No modern forensic analysis has confirmed it. But the location, the century, and the historical record all point to the same conclusion and no other country in the Caribbean holds anything that fits the evidence this closely. #NationalMuseum #christophercolumbusanchor #pos #journeytott #History
