@drforbeez: Do you get sympathy cards from doctors and nurses when human family members pass away? #griefandloss #petloss #petgrief #rainbowbridge #veterinarian
My vet always sends a card. The timeframe doesn’t matter it’s the fact that they do it.

How awful. I’m sorry they dumped on you. Cards with rules attached lose any meaning.

I expect nothing from a vet or staff outside of the agreed upon service(s). I have gotten sympathy cards and it was EXTREMELY thoughtful and I loved them. I’ve also not gotten them and I didn’t think a thing beyond that. Just my thoughts as a pet owner who has loved lost dozens.

I would send them the gift along with the order form or whatever that shows when you ordered the gift. Explain to them that you did, indeed, think of them in their time of grief and that their card was entitled and frankly rude. It doesn’t matter what they are going through, you can’t treat people like they are beholden to you.

Did YOU get a thank you card from her in a timely manner? I think most of us would agree that the time and care you and your staff (vet clinics) take with us and caring for our pet in the end is worth 1,000,000 thank yous. It means the world to us to experience such compassion during that time. THANK YOU!

I think that card was more about them than it was for you.

I hate sympathy cards. Just when I’m picking myself up off the floor, boom this card comes and is a reminder. No thanks.

It’s pretty rude for anyone to expect a sympathy card. I never expected one.

As a practice we purposely send them a little while after because grief is fresh and we want to upset them more. We can never win.

I am touched if anyone remembers my pets. Timing doesn't matter.

I think that providing exceptional care for our pets is what we need as patients in your practice. Any thing additional or above that is lovely and such a wonderful thought, but it shouldn’t be expected. That’s too much for the staff that has their hearts broken every day at the job they have been called to do.

Grief is so hard. It’s so easy for it to come out sideways especially toward people who are kind and generous. It’s never too late to say something about grief or to give a gift. I’m sure it feels really hard to after this though. Your heart is clearly always in such a good place. 💗

Tbh it’s very, very nice but not expected. What is expected is a peaceful euthanasia/transition.

You can’t control how she feels. You are doing the best you can. Don’t take it personally - it is probably not about you.

my vet called when I lost my cat and the next time I saw her she cried with me. but even if I had gotten nothing I still know she loved my pet and did everything possible to keep her with me as long as she could I would never be upset about her not sending a card.

We are rather large hospital and it takes sometimes two weeks to get the card signed by every employee because that’s our policy. We don’t just stamp a generic stamp on there so it could take four weeks before a card sympathy card gets to the client.

I think she’s acting on emotion. It’s an easy thing to do for anyone. I personally think a phone call explaining what you had planned would be thoughtful, caring, and appropriate. This way she can hear from you personally and know that you didn’t just overlook her heartbreaking situation and when the gift does come, it doesn’t appear as though you’re only sending something in reaction to her card. That’s my opinion on how to handle it.

The human hospitals around me send thank you cards with all of the nurses that treated you signing after even like an endoscopy like the next day. I think it’s weird, but it may be part of an expectation they now have it the ones near you do that too.

Oh and when I was in the appt my vet came and hugged me and told me I was making the right call. I don’t know how you do this job. You’re an angel. You’re not soulless

I've never expected a sympathy card from my vets, them taking such being with me, taking such good care of my pets, and being there for me when I had to say goodbye and let go is all that I need.
Receiving the cards (which always come) is always an extra surprise bonus!
I know my vet cares from the Heart and that all that matters! 🫂💞

Do not beat yourself up. They are speaking from grief. You are not horrible. You were there for the pet, that is what really matters. They will get over it, if not it is not on you
