@theunconventionaljew: For centuries, a woman’s last name has been decided for her — first by her father, then often by her husband — passed down through a system that rarely asked what she wanted her name to mean. But what if that didn’t have to be the case? What if women could create last names for themselves — names that reflect who they are, not who they’re connected to? Is it possible to build a new naming tradition from scratch, one that doesn’t require tracing a line back to a man? I want to know what you think: should women have the option to choose or even invent their own last names, disconnected from either parent’s lineage? Would you take one yourself if it existed and if so, what would it stand for? #womenforwomen #womensupportingwomen #feminineenergy
I had my bio father’s last name, my adopted father’s last name, and my ex-husband’s last name. When I divorced, I dropped my last name altogether and made my middle name my last name. I do not belong to a man. I am a whole being unto myself.

Brewster. Many English last names that end in ster were first held by women. Women were generally the brewers of ale at the ale houses and at home, so Brewster, Webster (weaver), Baxter (baker), Dexter (dyer)
You could do it like the Icelanders. Be named after your mother. So is if Ingrid is Helga’s daughter her name is Ingrid Helgasdottir.

we have passed down our middle name down the matriarchal line. I've thought about dropping the last name and making the middle name the new last name

I legally changed my last name to Marvel after my divorce. I needed to shed my ex-husband's name, and I had outgrown my dad's name, so I picked a whole brand new one to help me feel myself again. Ms. Marvel is the single most powerful superhero in the Marvel comic universe, and I needed to borrow that power for myself.

We make one up because even taking your mother’s last name is taking her father’s last name.

I know of a local artist who married her second husband later in life- she didn’t take his name or hyphenate, they both changed their last name to the island they got married on. They are now the Santorinis 🤩
