In many Arab countries, as well as in some other parts of the world, there are women who face violence, oppression, control, and the denial of their most basic rights and freedoms.
Being Arab does not mean I should hide this painful reality or pretend it doesn't exist. I am an Arab woman, and I openly acknowledge that many Arab women still have not gained their freedom—and I am one of them.
At the same time, I'm speaking for women everywhere. Every woman, no matter her nationality, culture, religion, or beliefs, deserves respect and has the right to freedom, safety, dignity, and equality.
Let's remember something important: without women, there would be no societies. Every woman deserves to live with dignity, to be heard, and to have the same opportunities as everyone else.
