🦞👇 In depth explanation of seeding: In the wild, crawfish live across connected bayous, canals, ditches, marshes, and flooded ground. They can move between areas, which gives separate populations more opportunities to mix naturally. A man-made crawfish pond is different. It has levees and defined borders, so the crawfish inside are much more isolated from populations outside that pond. Throughout the season, we see crawfish coming through our buying docks from farms across Louisiana. That gives us a close look at which ponds are producing healthy, active crawfish with strong body condition. When it is time to seed, we select healthy broodstock from a few good sources and introduce them into our ponds. Sometimes that means trading crawfish from our ponds with another fisherman. Other times, we buy sacks from fishermen whose crawfish we believe will make strong breeding stock. Once those crawfish are placed into the pond, they have time to mature, mate, and eventually enter their burrows. The females reproduce inside those burrows, and when the ponds are flooded again, the next generation begins emerging into the water. Bringing crawfish in from outside populations can also broaden the breeding pool. When any animal population stays isolated and closely related for enough generations, genetic diversity can decline. That can increase the chance of undesirable traits appearing and may eventually affect growth, reproduction, survival, and the overall consistency of the population. That does not mean genetics are the only thing that matters. Good forage, clean water, oxygen, population density, and overall pond management have an even larger effect on the crawfish we produce. It also does not mean we dump random crawfish into our ponds. Introducing outside crawfish can introduce diseases or other problems, so selecting active, healthy broodstock from sources we know is extremely important. That is what seeding looks like in the crawfish industry. We are not filling the pond with next season’s entire crop.
