Before you watch this, I want to make one thing very clear: I lost no one in my family on 9/11. My dad survived. My brothers survived. My family was incredibly lucky. This isn’t a story about losing someone. It’s a story about being 16 years old, living about two miles from the World Trade Center, with my dad working across the street from it, my brothers working in Manhattan, and suddenly finding myself living through one of the greatest tragedies and collective traumas this country has ever experienced. I never intended to share this. Honestly, I’m not even sure why I’m sharing it now. But I’ve carried this story around for 25 years, and I’ve realized that I’ve needed to get it out. So yes, this is an eight-minute video. And I don’t really care if you watch it. There’s no lesson I’m trying to teach you. There’s no shocking revelation at the end. There’s no particularly neat story arc. It’s just what I remember. What I saw. What it felt like to be a 16-year-old kid who didn’t understand what was happening until it was suddenly very, very close to home. And, eventually, how that experience changed what I thought I wanted to do with my life. I’m sharing it because I think there are probably thousands of people who have their own version of this story. Maybe you were in New York. Maybe you were in Washington. Maybe you were somewhere across the country watching it on television. Maybe you lost someone. Maybe you knew someone who did.
