The average age of menopause in the US is 52, so for many, perimenopausal symptoms start in their early 40s 2. Irregular periods are the most consistent sign of perimenopause. Vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats) are also common though, and often more disruptive on the daily 3. Perimenopause affects all parts of us, not just our periods. Other symptoms my patients experience are mood swings, brain fog, and joint pain. 4. Yes, you can still get pregnant. While your ovulation may be irregular, you likely are still ovulating, so you can definitely still get pregnant while in perimenopause. Contraception is recommended - some birth control pills even help some patients with perimenopausal symptoms! 5. We have both hormonal and non-hormonal options, in systemic and local forms.
