@anna..papalia: 🤝When you nail your job interview and they say, “Can you provide us with 3 references?” Don’t panic. ▪️You do not have to use your current boss as a reference. It is normal in the corporate world to ask a prospective employer to NOT contact your current employer because you don’t want them to know you’re looking for a new job. But you do need to provide a boss/supervisor or executive that you have worked closely with so if you can’t use your current boss ask a previous boss to give you a refence. ▪️You should also provide a co-worker/peer that you’re currently working with and if you’re a manager, it’s always great to provide a refence from someone you managed. ▪️If you’re entry level, and you have limited work experience- use a professor/teacher, coach or mentor. 🤔Asking for a reference is a favor. Reach out via text or email to ask their permission first. 👇🏼Use this template: Subject: Reference request - [Your Name] Hi [Reference Name], I hope you’re doing well! I am currently applying for a [Job Title] role at [Company Name], and I was hoping I could list you as a professional reference. Based on our time working together at [Previous Company], I believe you can best speak to my skills in [Skill 1] and [Skill 2]. Would you feel comfortable being a reference for me? If you are open to it, I’ve attached my updated resume and the job description for your review. Please let me know what contact information you would like me to share with hiring managers. Best regards, [Your Name] [Your Phone Number] 📆When you know a company will be calling them, give them a heads up and let them know what to expect, “I applied to the Assistant Manger role and I am in the final Stages. Deb from Johnson & Johnson will be calling you this week, can you put in a good word for me?” Choose the right people. Ask for permission. Give them a heads up. Provide context and details to make it easy for them to help you. Good luck 🍀 And remember, when they make you a job offer- always NEGOTIATE. ➡️Check out my negotiation tips playlist@Anna Papalia to learn how to negotiate a job offer. #joboffer #jobinterview #jobsearch #references #corporate

Yes absolutely give it’s a heads up! I had a very bad employee use me as a reference once and it did not go well for them. Had they asked I would’ve been honest and told them I was not the best person for them to use.

nobody want references. They will know in 10 min that you can do that job or not. Skills and know how to explain problem solving is the key.

I've been in different roles in the same company for 7 years. All my previous bosses still work there and everyone would be close. I've gotten an offer for a new job but they want 2 references, how would you approach this?

I don’t have any contact with old bosses. They don’t work there anymore. I simply can’t find them or get their email. I simply can’t get a job now

Always ask if you can name the person as a reference and tell them they will be called so they’re prepared.

Can we ask the company to contact HR for reference rather than giving a specific person?

@Anna Papalia what about if the company insists to have your current and former superiors as reference? How to handle it if we are more comfortable to provide other references such as other departments heads or colleagues that have worked with us?
