@taylorcezanne: NEW PINNED VIDEO❗(SAVE THIS!!) My most frequently asked question is: “How do I train my dog to listen to me outside?” & here is my DETAILED ANSWER. If you want TRUE reliability in any training cue (for ex: come here, down, go to place, a simple recall), you need to follow through with the ENTIRE TRAINING PROCESS, which is: 1. Load the marker. Use a clicker or the word ‘yes’ to tell your dog “YES, that’s correct!” (repeat 10-15x) 2. Lure the behavior. Take a treat & lure your dog into the position you want them in, and mark the second they do it. (repeat 10-15x) 3. Fade the treat lure. Take the treat out of your hand & use a hand signal instead. Important note: go back and forth with using a lure & not using one, until your dog reliably does it 9 out of 10 times. Do not move on until then. 4. Add the verbal cue. Say the cue one time, while using your hand signal, and mark the second your dog does it. Give them patience! This is the part where learning happens! (repeat for days if possible, in all the rooms of the house) 5. Build in distractions! Most people don’t do this. I want you doing it every day. A new distraction for every day: could be a small toy nearby, or another person walking by. If your dog can’t ignore the distractions, go back to step 4. 6. PRACTICE EVERYWHERE! If you want true reliability outdoors, you need to practice outdoors. **In this video, I’m using ‘down’ as an example, but you can swap with any cue** I really hope this post helps you guys! Please leave me comments/feedback below so I know whats working and what needs improving on my end. Thanks! My puppy doesn’t really care for any treat when we are outside. We tried super high value things that she normally doesn’t get (fresh egg, cheese, fish, etc.) and nothing really gets her attention. She does listen from time to time out of the goodness of her heart but I can’t really motivate her beyond that. What do I do?

I messed up with not fading out the treat. My 14 month old will look for a treat and then wait it out. He’s very smart. 😓😭

I hate the words yes. I have always said good and my trainer keeps trying to change me to yes. Is there a reason yes is preferred?

Do you no longer have your guide for training older rescue dogs? Because I’m at a loss for teaching potty training and how to get her to learn her name.

So if my 5month old doesn’t listen outside but already knows the command and lure do I still do the same steps in the video?

I’ve done all that but it’s still all bets off if there’s another dog around.
