A failed thesis defense was my first rejection. I went home crying, my mom saw me and asked me what happened. I told her I was having a hard time. Instead of hearing me out, it turned into a competition about who's having more of a hard time because.. of course "I had it easy as a student". When I tried explaining while crying because I was already so overwhelmed, she blew off at me because trying to make her understand something she couldn't is disrespectful to her past experiences as an "adult who already experienced it all". I just wanted to explain what happened and she was the one who asked me. Since then, I never opened up again.
