This has been a problem for a while and its not only a problem with frontier models. When chatgpt 4 with reasoning got replaced with 5.0, the new model was significantly worse to the point of being somewhat unusable in my experience. Not having reliability that the tool you rely on is still going to be there tomorrow is a big problem indeed.

I moved over to glm-5.5 a week or two ago, and it's 100% the only coding model I'm using now, sure it's chatty, but it's 75% cheaper, so even with the extra yapping it's still a 50% save and I use around 650m-1b tokens a week. still on sonnet for chat and info, but coding only tasks... open source Chinese models are as good.

If you're not just sitting there clicking accept, you only need Frontier models for the planning stage. Fable suggested something for my game development architecture today, and it was so brilliant, I'm likely never going to forget it.

In my experience, the harness matters most. I use auto with cursor most of the time and it works just as good as CC with opus
