@thryvewithlauren: Raising the head of your bed 4–6 inches may help reduce morning POTS symptoms by helping your body retain more fluid overnight. When you sleep completely flat, more fluid shifts toward your chest and head. Your kidneys sense this and may increase urine production, which can leave you with a lower blood volume by morning. Since many people with POTS already have low blood volume, this can make symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and a racing heart worse when you first stand up. Sleeping on a gentle incline may help your body retain more sodium and water overnight, increasing blood volume and making mornings a little easier. A few tips! • The evidence-based recommendation is to elevate the entire head of your bed by 4–6 inches using bed risers or blocks. • If that is not practical, a wedge pillow that supports your entire torso (rather than just your head and neck) may be a more comfortable option for some people. While it has not been studied as extensively as whole-bed elevation, I have personally found it helpful. • Give it a few weeks of consistent use to see if it makes a difference. Like many POTS strategies, this does not work for everyone, but it is a simple, low-cost intervention that many autonomic specialists recommend as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Have you tried this? Has it made your mornings easier? 📚 Reference: Bryarly M, Raj SR, et al. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I was always told to sleep with my head flat but I never could! I wasn't able to breathe properly laying completely flat, my neck pain and instability would get worse and my blood was literally all going straight to my head as if my feet were elevated. So for a long time now I sleep with my head elevated and it's been great 🥰
