@reinaanddad: Medical procedures for special needs children is extra hard when they don’t understand what’s going on. For my daughter Reina who has high level of anxiety, getting a blood test is a big challenge. I’m not sure what else I can do to make this smoother and to be able to get the results we need. #autism #specialneeds #medicalprocedure #bloodtest
As an autistic person with a needle phobia I found someone who could come to our house to take my blood and it was the best blood draw experience I’ve ever had being In my own home was calming also using a buzzy bee helps stimulate your nerves to distract you brain good job

I do recommend getting her a dr play kit to do practice blood draws at home. have her pretend to draw your blood you pretend to draw hers and make it a regular thing leading up to the next time you take her in for a real draw.

Perhaps a prescription for Valium? It is a strong sedative and helps make things go smoother for me!

The lab I go to has an iPad mounted so you can play games or doodle while you get your blood drawn. Would that help Reina?

we use a 3 step visual social story for my daughter. 1. Lay down, 2. Eat candy, 3. Close eyes/hold mama’s hand. I would be happy to make you one if you think it would be helpful. We use a special type of candy that she only gets to have at stressful medical appointments. ❤️

the last time I got my blood drawn I was lowkey a second away from screaming before they stopped and I can't blame her for being scared, hope it goes well🫰

No advice, just another parent of a child on the spectrum giving you a high five!

I hate getting blood drawn too my doctor uses small needles (smaller than the normal ones ) to take my blood and it helps :) I also have adhd and most meds that are supposed to make me drowsy don’t really work all that works is melatonin personally:)

Have you tried using a social story to help Reina prepare for blood draws? Or maybe a first then board or visual schedule?

I would also try and not tell her and don’t say stuff like scary, hurt nervous etc because she’s also feeding off what you are saying

I am higher on the spectrum. I just let them know that. I also have PTSD from past medical experiences. I’ve had over 20 surgeries, including one today. Typically they give me a very accommodating/nice person to do my blood draws when I tell them this. Hope it went well.

Is this at a pediatric hospital? Go to a pediatric hospital and ask for child life. They will get her blood draw easily.

have you ever tried the buzzy injection pain relief device? it’s for younger children for IV sticks and blood draws, but it goes around the arm with an ice pack and vibrates to block out the perception of the pain from needles. idk if that would make her anxiety and agitation worse, but you could always ask about it!
