@itspaulagorman: My POV on using Upwork and Fiverr for consulting work is that the ROI isn’t there - it ends up being just like applying for jobs and the pricing is LOW. Consulting is a relationship business. Long term and high paying clients come from your network so spend the time building and nurturing it. I spend a lot of time in my community @theconsultantsroom teaching consultants how to approach landing clients #independentconsultant #consulting

I’ve used Upwork to find clients. I don’t typically apply to jobs I’m not invited to. I do fractional work that’s long term…I would not waste my time on general job postings on there as they are crap. Most of the project based work on there is not worth it and I decline virtually all of them. Great take on how to use it to see what companies are looking for.

Never worked for me. Poor follow up on the hiring client’s side.

I agree! Relationships have been key with growing my consulting business. Those platforms can be a good way to get small side projects or help to build your portfolio but I wouldn't recommend making it your only way to generate revenue.

For me, it’s nothing but low ball offers, tire kickers, and very few repeat clients because they’re always looking for lower cost

Literally could not agree more. I find that they value your skills less when the relationship starts on those platforms

Neverrrrrr arghhh. I’ve had some terrible experiences with trying to find help there. I’m better off asking for referrals on social or searching for experts on social

Me seeing this after I created my profile yesterday, lol! I’ll give it 30 days but it’s not the only platform I’m utilizing!

You are right. Upwork is over saturated with freelancers, and also in my experience there are a lot of ‘empty’ listings that don’t turn into a real hire on the platform. It has been a good platform to see the needs of potential clients and get an idea what other freelancers are offering too.

I was on upwork for 3 months and couldn’t land any jobs. I even paid for premium and my application was barely opened. I ultimately gave up. Was trying to do exactly what you’re doing and not sure if it’s my path anymore. Would love to know your story :)

I’m new to Upwork and it’s only ok. I have been denied many jobs that I was qualified for because I’m new to the platform. So it’s a catch 22.

Surprisingly I have landed 2 solid full time roles on Upwork. But your profile has to be very legit, key words solid, and you have to be a good interviewer.

I joined Upwork last month and have no reviews or job to speak to my cred yet, but have been invited to apply for a couple jobs already (no connect spend on my part). I stacked my profile with projects for sale and links and photos to my portfolio, so that probably helped. But true, these are smaller jobs, good starting point though!

How do you break out of only getting jobs from referrals. I've been fortunate to land some really good referred work over the last couple years since I was laid off, but I can't seem to get anything outside of that.

I tried those almost 10 years ago & only a handful of people were getting jobs. Most were offering $5-$10. No thanks

FIVRR is nothing but a scam in my view. Hired a „German“ to lay out my cv, started receiving WhatsApps from Pakistan. Received a refund. Will never use them again.
