@the_adamhall: We just interviewed a bunch of 18 to 21 year olds for a junior estimator role. None of them had used Excel. None of them had used Word. None of them could touch type. I assumed the younger generation would be more tech literate than us. But here's the thing. They're phone native, not computer native. Swipe, tap, scroll. But a keyboard and a spreadsheet? Foreign. It's not their fault. Schools stopped teaching typing. Everything moved to apps and touchscreens. And now we're hiring people who can't do the basics we took for granted. So if you're a young person reading this. Learn Excel. Learn to touch type. Learn the fundamentals of business software. Because your phone skills won't get you the job. And if you're hiring. Stop assuming digital native means competent. It doesn't. We're adjusting our interview process accordingly. Maybe you should too.

We don't use Microsoft products because of the licensing in schools. we teach them GoogleSheets, GoogleDocs, etc. They also do it on touch screens-Chromebooks, cell phones etc. They don't use keyboards or the mouse either.

maybe not inaustralua or whatever, but they do in the usa and canada. my school required me to use the full office suite, learn touch ttping etc.. me and most my friends can comfortably hit 110 wpm

Because we took WHOLE CLASSES in high school and college about how to use Microsoft Suite. These kids don’t do that anymore. Also, Microsoft is expensive, so most schools use Google because it’s free.
