The Battle of Hostomel Airport, also known as the Battle of Antonov Airport, was one of the most critical and decisive strategic engagements in the opening days of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Aiming to establish a strategic "airbridge" to swiftly capture the capital city of Kyiv, the Russian military launched a high-stakes heliborne operation to seize control of the airfield. The assault was spearheaded by elite elements of the Russian Airborne Forces, including the 31st Guards Separate Assault Brigade, the 11th Guards Air Assault Brigade, and the 45th Guards Spetsnaz Brigade, heavily supported by a formidable fleet of Ka-52 "Alligator" attack helicopters and Mi-8 transport choppers. On the other side, the defense initially rested on a small, lightly-armed garrison of around 200–300 soldiers from the 4th Rapid Reaction Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, who were later reinforced by elite units such as the SBU's Alpha Group, the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, and local Territorial Defense Forces. While Russian forces eventually managed to control the territory by land on the following day, the operation was a strategic failure for Moscow. Ukrainian forces successfully disabled and cratered the 3,500-meter runway using heavy artillery, which prevented Russian Il-76 heavy transport planes from landing with vital reinforcements and armored vehicles. This heroic defense effectively disrupted Russia's "blitzkrieg" plan to decapitate the Ukrainian government in Kyiv, shifting the entire trajectory of the war, though the battle tragically resulted in the destruction of the world’s largest cargo aircraft, the Antonov An-225 "Mriya." Focusing on the spearhead of the invasion, The Initial Assault on Antonov Airport began around midday on February 24, 2022, standing out as one of the largest and most daring helicopter-borne operations in modern military history. Flying at extremely low altitudes along the Dnipro River to evade radar, a massive formation of Russian helicopters crossed the Belarusian border to strike at the heart of Ukraine's aviation hub. The 31st Guards Separate Airborne Assault Brigade played a pivotal role as the main shock force of this initial wave. Renowned for their rigorous training and elite status, the paratroopers of the 31st Brigade were tasked with rapidly securing the airfield's core infrastructure, including the control tower, hangars, and defensive perimeters. Landing amidst heavy anti-aircraft fire, these VDV troops quickly engaged the outnumbered Ukrainian National Guardsmen in fierce close-quarters combat. However, despite their tactical efficiency and successful touchdown during The Initial Assault on Antonov Airport, the 31st Brigade soon found themselves trapped in a deadly war of attrition. Cut off from immediate ground reinforcements and facing relentless Ukrainian artillery bombardment, the elite paratroopers suffered catastrophic casualties.
