Pillows! Once you get home, chairs and even the couch might feel super uncomfortable. Pillows to support your back are a good idea. I had my fusion June 2025, and tbh I’m still learning how to live life. You’ll get through this! 💚

Hi! I got my spinal fusion over a year ago and I have a couple things and tips I want you to remember. Number 1, you will feel like you are dying, you will be in pain for the first month or two. 2, wear lots of baggy clothes and be in a cool environment to avoid sweating as much as possible because it will sting. 3, follow what your doctor/pt says and do your recommended sitting/daily exercise time. 4, try to build you core and back muscles in advance! 5, please be patient with yourself and remember this is a huge life change, healing takes time but your body will eventually go back to normal. 6, if you are still “crooked” after surgery that most likely will go away with the swelling in a couple weeks! 7, drink lots of liquids and try to use the bathroom as much as possible, I would recommend getting something to put in front of the toilet so you can use it to help you get up and down! Don’t be ashamed to ask for help for anything! Good luck and I wish you an easy and safe recovery!!❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

everyone has such a different experience honestly from what i've seen other people say, but for me, as someone 1.5 weeks out from getting T2-L1 I FINALLY SEE THE LIGHT. the first week was the worst week of my life and the nausea, pain, and stomach pain from constipation was awful. what got me through it was taking it day by day and remembering that the state i was in wasn't going to be forever. finally exactly a week later the "switch" ppl talk abt in recovery finally happened for me. Within that first week and up to now im able to walk long distances, be happy, go up stairs, and honestly act a lot more normal, even spending time with friends. don't get me wrong i still get pain and feel light headed being upright for a long time, but im only on tylenol and ibuprofen now and can tolerate the pain. though, still every night i have a hard time sleeping and finding a comfortable position. biggest advice is find good shows to binge, remind yourself of the good things coming, and get the coziest bed set up you can. (also do your physical therapy/walk as much as possible even though it sucks) YOU GOT THIS

no heavy backpacks or bags period! if you are in school explain your situation and ask your teachers to hold onto your notebooks. my rod unscrewed and came up at my neck due to my backpack.

if you were thinking about cutting your hair short, do it! youll feel too tired for any sort of hygiene, so having your hair out the way is the best. speaking of hygiene, pack travel packs of toothbrushes and wet wipes. also, post op you WILL have some sort of body dysmorphia, so please be easy on yourself. i grew 3 inches and lost so much weight, that i felt like a ghost. you might notice little imperfections, but that’s okay. once you gain your strength back, and start working on back exercises, you will gain confidence. just remember, this will be so beneficial for you in the long term. you got this!

dont be afraid to ask for things!! i was terrified of iv's and they got a j-tip so it wouldnt hurt. i was scared of changing in front of people so every single person with me left and guarded the curtain. if you get a pain pump dont be afraid to press it! also its really mot as bad as most people make it out to be like yeah it sucks but the worst of it was like a 7/10 or an 8/10

Everyone’s recovery is different but I definitely agree with those who commented about prioritizing mental health! Depending on how big your surgery is, the recovery time is a battle I won’t lie. I’m three years post and I’ve never been better though. It was painful but it made a stronger person!

a lot of people already said a lot, but one thing i haven’t seen is a zinc sunscreen for the scar. the last thing you want is it to blister or burn so i definitely recommend. you got this!!

My fave things during recovery have been a grabber tool to grab things off the ground, ice packs that you can wrap around your torso, a kindle holder and remote to change pages on my book (if you’re a reader), a whiteboard to keep up with meds through out the day, also I started taking magnesium and calcium vitamins afterwards to help with recovery

One thing I feel like NO ONE really thinks about are the trash picker things. Honestly super useful post op, and even after that! And I also say a cooling pillow. I didn’t use mine much, but let me tell you, you sweat SO MUCH, as least I did, so it was pretty nice to have on hand.

I had my surgery 11 months ago and I have to say the biggest thing is staying positive. I know it sounds so cliche but recovery can be very lonely and draining. It feels like no one understands so you need to find it in yourself to keep going. It will get better. The nights it feels the worst you need to remember it will heal and you will feel so much better. Focus on the good days. You will have highs and lows. One day you will walk for 15 minutes and the next day you will only be able to walk 5, it’s all part of healing. I promise it gets better and it is so worth it. Watch your favorite shows, watch new shows. For me I discovered smosh on YouTube and abbot elementary and it helped me tremendously to get my mind off of my back. Also allow yourself to sleep and rest but make yourself get up and walk and move. I promise you’ll be okay.

DONT push your limits that the doctor gives you, also for concert use the ice pack they give you I did and it made it sm better, and the hospital pillow (keep the stuff they give you for memories) TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT IT I would get so upset and nervous thinking abt it before hand and it js made everything feel worse

mine was a week ago today and the biggest tip i can give is walking! walking around my house relieves tension and pain in my back so i love to do this before going to bed. even if it is just walking in circles around your living room i think it will help you a lot!! good luck with the everything and i hope everything goes smoothly and you have an amazing recovery 💕

TMI but make sure you have bowl movements after because depending on the hospital they won’t let you leave until you have bowl movements to see if everything is working right

a bed rail will change your life. you’re probably gonna have to log roll to get in/out of bed and it genuinely helped me so so much. also don’t be discouraged for the first bit. i was in such a slump the first month and that was only a few months ago but it gets so much better i promise. just take it one step at a time and know it won’t be bad forever

Bring a pillow everywhere you go. Sleepin- I have to have like 3-6 pillows just to lay on my back comfortably. I had a spinal fusion at 12yrs old. I’m 25 now. It still sucks.

ask for a scopolamine patch (nausea patch) in pre-op. It helps immensely with post op nausea from the anesthesia!

Try to go for short walks when recovering! It can simply be just in your house, it just keeps you moving! Also this was just for me but i got random pains sometimes, like one week my shoulder would be hurting a lot then another week my stomach was hurting, and i think i just really needed to move more. Goodluck !!💙
