As someone whose danced there whole life, the reason people struggle with retention is not because they don’t remember it’s because they don’t have the foundation so their bodies don’t understand the movement yet

Classes where they will teach you BASICS and give you corrections. If you're not being corrected, you're wasting your money. JMHO.

This is exactly why I call street jazz, K-pop, heels, etc. stylized classes. Those styles are built on foundational dance technique that should be learned in technique classes. I always tell my students upfront that if they’re taking one of my stylized classes, it is not a technique class. I’ll absolutely break down the choreography and explain the movements, but I’m not teaching the underlying technique from scratch. I expect students to already have, or at least understand, the foundational technique so we can focus on style, performance, and execution.

Why do you consider vogue to be a foundational class? I want to learn the basics of dance to vogue but it’s overwhelming and every time I take any dance class they don’t feel beginner at all

oh louder ! idc if you're doing freestyle or choreo, you need to be in foundational classes, if only to get movements and grooves right, know what you're dancing, and being able to generate and channel creativity in any piece you create

My foundation is Jazz, Hip Hop and Modern. As someone who could afford ballet growing up these were able to carry me through all my training once I was in college.

I went to a modern dance class and didn’t know that I needed either contemporary or ballet. I was struggling but luckily I was in the back.

As a diehard bunhead I love that ballet was not your only foundational class, it is great technique but you can develop amazing jazz, modern and hip hop technique with or without ballet

I appreciate this message so much! When I was studying in high school, it was mandatory for all the musical theater students to take tap jazz and ballet. Actually we had to take modern too lyrical and contemporary was part of a module in our jazz class, but the dancers at my school were so well rounded and most of the time they were performing jazz, funk and hip-hop and a lot of music video choreography but they had that core foundation and they were good at all of them! I’m much older now and miss being in the dance studio, but in Los Angeles, it’s a lot of look at me and not enough technique and I need to get back to that! What you are doing is so important🤩
