The Massacre at Wounded Knee December 29, 1890. Chief Spotted Elk was simply responding to a summons from the Pine Ridge Agency, setting out south from Mnicouju Territory towards Pine Ridge Reservation (more importantly to negotiate with Chief Red Cloud of the Oglala on the matter of the atrocities that the Lakota were facing). They were intercepted by United States Army of the 7th Cavalry Regiment led by Major Samuel Whitside on the 28 of Dec. 1890 and were marched to Wounded Knee Creek where they were forced to camp. The next morning Spotted Elk’s camp of Mnicouju and some Hunkpapa woke up to having their guns confiscated and when the remainder of the 7th Cavalry joined Samuel Whitside, they began to fire upon the unarmed camp of men, women, and children. Killing 375 Mnicouju and some Hunkpapa. The ones that managed to get away ran north and some hid in the surrounding area from the gun fire and artillery strategically placed on the ridges that looked down at the camp. The many that managed to get away ran back to Mnicouju Territory about 180miles north. They hid during the day and ran under the cover of night. However, many succumbed to their injuries and the cold—leaving a trail of bodies that lead back up towards the Old Bridger community. Taking into account the ones that died fleeing the massacre and the 375 at Wounded Knee—the death toll is 600 Mnicouju and Hunkpapa Lakota. The descendants of the survivors are here today and the majority of the Wounded Knee Survivor Runners are descendants, including my family and I. #nativetiktok #woundedknee #fyp #stillhere
