Growing up in Norway in the 90s, we were taught 5. America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Apparently Antarctica didn't count since no one lived there? But then again, we didn't really talk about continents, but "verdensdeler", world parts. Later that seems to have become seven. And also, we learned about Australia in the early 90s, but by the early 00s it was Oceania. That always confused me. But so does continents/world parts, as well.

I was born in Western Canada in 1981, and I was taught there were eight continents. The seven usual suspects, plus Central America.

I’m Australian and in the 1970s was taught Australia was the biggest island and smallest continent. I was horrified to learn no other countries teach that.

Not related to the point of the video but if you’re gonna mention the Romance languages and you’re gonna list them why not include all of them and only 4 out of 5? When people don’t bother with these details it leads to those listening and learning something to come away with the wrong or incomplete idea. (Not your fault, of course everyone is responsible for their own research, but unfortunately most people hear one thing and run with it) And a lot of sources keep doing the same thing. They mention the “major” or “relevant” languages which is more than a bit silly in this context. Didn’t mean to come across as policing the correctness of how info is presented in your vids, it just happened that I saw the same issue in a video earlier in the day and realised a lot of people do this.

i was born in the former eastern bloc after the fall of the iron curtain and we did learn that 6 continent model with a caveat - that there are 6 actual continents when it comes to landmass (called kontinent) but that there are 7 "world parts" (literally svetadiel) where europe and asia get divided at the ural mountains but this was explained as a cultural divide and we just kind of went with both? also sometimes teachers would even use a model of 5 continents (eurasia and only one america) but 7 "world parts" idk i hope this is interesting hahah💞

What I was taught and what makes sense to me are two different things. I’m in the land mass definition fan group. Now it gets murky when we start defining how large a land mass needs to be to count as a continent is another conversation.

These differences in continent naming conventions is usually the source of the "People from the US calling themselves American is unforgivable" discourse comes from. People don't realize these different models exist. But why are we arguing over the name of some Italian colonizer in the first place?

I usually say 4 and then ask if that was a bad faith question and ask if they know how many plates there are and glare at them... unless they are a child and then I'll say there are different ideas on the subject and ask follow up questions.
