When a commercial flight bound for Kelowna, British Columbia, was diverted back to Calgary due to regional wildfires, 90-year-old Patricia Robinson found herself stuck at the airport. She had been traveling from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to attend her 90th birthday celebration arranged by her family. While on board, Robinson connected with fellow passenger Quinn Sedmak, a 48-year-old resident from north of Kelowna. After learning their original flight and subsequent options were canceled, Sedmak linked up with Tanner Salewich, a 45-year-old volunteer firefighter and auto mechanic also heading toward the region. The pair decided to rent a car for a seven-hour drive to Kelowna and invited Robinson to join them. She accepted the offer and texted her family about the updated plan before setting off. Sedmak told The Washington Post, “We had a fun conversation right from the get-go”. He added, “I asked her to tell me any good stories she’s had throughout her life.” Reflecting on the unexpected journey, Robinson told the outlet, “We just kind of clicked right off the bat”. She further stated, “I wasn’t concerned about it at all… I just totally trusted them both. I had no qualms about it.” Regarding the decision to travel together, Salewich noted, “Basically, we, the three amigos, decided to cancel some flights and take a trip.” The trio arrived at Kelowna International Airport around 12:30 a.m. the following day, where Robinson reunited with her son and insisted on splitting the vehicle rental cost. She successfully celebrated her 90th birthday with family on August 15. Commenting on the experience, Sedmak shared, “It’s been wonderful to see so many people respond to a simple tale of kindness and adventure. I’d like to think what happened wasn’t extraordinary. It was simply people being people.” Robinson added, “I think with all the turmoil that’s going on in the world, people just need something to give them a lift and realize there are still good people… When you sit back and look at it all, it really is remarkable.” Have you ever experienced acts of kindness from total strangers while traveling? #Kelowna #Canada #PatriciaRobinson #QuinnSedmak #japd
