You don't need to get married, sure, but a divorce isn't tragic either. It's a breakup with more steps. Not every relationship lasts, but that doesn't mean those that don't are a waste of time. There's plenty of relationships I had that didn't work out that I'm thankful for anyway.

Yes! This is exactly why I wouldn't accept a proposal from my partner of three years. He knows things need to change and that he needs to put in more effort to meet my expectations. If marriage isn't going to benefit me as much as possible, then I don't want it

What advice do you have for younger couples who aren’t truly established yet? Maybe finishing up college or just attempting to start life.

Thing is I would say that you should still try something even if it’ll fail eventually because the experience of it succeeding and then failing is useful but also can be looked at fondly, but being married on paper isn’t an experience and changes nothing in your life unless there’s legal parameters that you could be protected by if you’re going to need them anyway say for financial reasons even if you don’t see marriage as a levelling up in your relationship

divorce is not a failed mariage.
lots of good mariage just happen to be good for a few years and then stop being good, so poeple divorce.
a failed mariage is a mariage, still going on while poeple are misérable.

Approximately 41% to 42% of first marriages in the United States end in divorce. While the common myth claims a 50% divorce rate, that number is inflated by a subset of individuals who get divorced multiple times.
