Today marks ten years since the release of California World, the last of six songs that Gus and his friend Nedarb added to their CALIFORNIA GIRLS EP. Unlike the EP’s five other tracks, which were created entirely via email through the winter of 2015-16, Gus and Ned made California World in person with Craig Xen. The culmination of an immensely productive chapter in Gus’s life, CALIFORNIA GIRLS represents a link between his 2015 and 2016 work, and his growth from an artist who recorded alone in his bedroom to one who recorded with friends in an intense, creative environment. In late 2015, Gus and Ned were corresponding online. They released their first single, Lil Kennedy, on December 11, then shortly afterward decided to collaborate on an EP. We spent that Christmas in Cambridge with Gus’s grandparents, and he got back to work in January. He began to conceptualize how he wanted the project to turn out. On January 7, he sent Ned some album artwork he had made using a rose from a bouquet of mine and a random photo he’d found on a Russian website. About a week later, Gus and Ned made the next single, Let Me Bleed. Gus requested more beats, craving them in order to express himself, and on January 21 he created Beamer Boy and Pray I Die. Days later, Gus filmed a spontaneous music video for the former at home with Emma and his friend Skylar. On February 2, Gus and Ned made Beat It. A week later, Gus had Emma dye his hair pink ahead of his first live performance in Tucson with Schemaposse. He was so proud of the songs he had been making with Ned that they comprised the bulk of his setlists at his earliest shows. During Gus’s brief stint in Pasadena in late February, he recorded California World and its music video with Craig Xen, another artist he had formed an intense friendship with online. It was one of the first songs Gus created in person with a collaborator, paving the way for Crybaby in the spring. Gus had so much fun creating CALIFORNIA GIRLS with Ned that he told him he wanted it to be one hundred tracks long. Ten years on, it symbolizes the cementing of their friendship and includes some of the most beloved LiL Peep songs.
