@doc4heart: I’m Dr. Michael Richman, a double board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon. With the excitement of the World Cup soccer matches going on now, I thought I would talk about something that nobody seems to bring up. So in today’s video, I discuss the terrifying link between heading in soccer and brain diseases like CTE and dementia. This risk is real and worth knowing about! #worldcup #Soccer #cte #concussion #dementia
We went trough this with THI and the NFL back in circa 2012. The topic has faded over the years perhaps because of 'assumption of risk' of the players in the legal perspective. Same issues should be considered for all levels of sports even in high school and college.

Common theme with Aussie rules football. The more autopsy’s performed the more evidence that CTE is becoming a significant problem, and i guess has always been.

Many of our sports are connected to our bodies and brains, unfortunately these things are not always considered as a life changing part of life..!

I used to play in a women’s league over 40, and I actually knocked my equilibrium out by doing a head shot, so I believe this is very detrimental to brain health

Doc, I worked at a high school where students sustained concussions every year from sports such as soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, baseball, and wrestling. It’s very concerning, especially since many of them had been playing these sports from a young age.💔

I think the same issue applies to divers.

I worry about military as well. If there were a way to diagnose CTE in living humans, would there even be treatment? Could it be reversible? Or would it be a matter of retiring out of the behavior to prevent further injury?

Actually a lot of people talk about this. As soon as the kids reach the level of junior soccer when they are expected to head the ball, get them out of the sport.
