A philosopher named Thomas Acquinas established the argument of potency vs actuality. Potency refers to the ability for something to become different from what it currently is. For instance, ice has the potency to become water or gas, and an infant has the potency to become an adult. Something can only be potent if there is something external that can cause that change, and that cause is referred to as actual. Imagine an egg is frying in a pan. In order for that egg to cook, the temperature from the stove will have to actualize the eggs potential to go from raw to edible. This idea can be applied to the universe, because since the universe had a beginning it is clearly potent. Therefore the universe had to have been created by something that was already actual. That cause had to be outside of space time and matter, so it could not be limited by those dimensions, meaning the cause has to be metaphysical. We identify this supreme being as God.
