01.07.2011 - 01.07.2026: 15 years ago Baby Manga left this world . Forgetting is the devil’s trick! She is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Cameroonian music. Baby Manga's life has not been a smooth river. She was forced into marriage to a teacher when she was barely 14 years old. She made her debut singing in nightclubs and cabarets. She performs Makossa, blues, jazz and Gospel standards. She began her career in Ivory Coast in 1975 and it was in this host country that she spent most of her career. Her real name is Elizabeth Bessem Ayamo Manga, she is better known as Bébé Manga. She owes her nickname “baby” to her Ivorian audience. She is so nicknamed because of her sweet and candid voice reminiscent of that of a baby. It was the cover of the song Amio by Ebanda Manfred which revealed her to the general public. I will tell you the story of this song which is today the most covered Cameroonian song. In 1960, Ebanda Manfred was 24 years old when he fell madly in love with a young high school student in Yaoundé named Amié Essomba Brigitte. A young single mother, the latter abandoned her studies to take care of her child while she was still in the first cycle of secondary education. Ebanda Manfred decides to take his courage in both hands and express his feelings to him. Unfortunately, the young mother lets him know that she cannot commit to a love affair until she has weaned her baby. Finding the wait very long and given the fact that he was going to return to Douala the following year, Ebanda Manfred decided to sing to him of his despair. This is the story of the birth of the famous song Amié. He literally says this: “Friend, njika bunya so mo, oa mo o ma dubè no, na mba na tondi oa? » which means: “Friend, when will you finally believe in my love?” The song Amié was produced when Brigitte Essomba was already married. The song was a huge success and caused Brigitte a lot of trouble at home. In fact, every time he listened to this song, her jealous husband couldn't help but hit her to the point that he ended up putting out her eye. Baby Manga died on Friday July 1, 2011 in Douala following a cardiac arrest. Bébé Manga is the singer of several hit songs: Mota Benama, Amio, Djiya Kamba, Essele Mba, Na Meya, Jemea Longo etc. What is your favorite Bébé Manga song? The portraits of Bébé Manga and several stars of Cameroonian music are drawn up in my book entitled: “The Icons of Cameroonian music”. The earth is dirty! If you don't live!
