🚨Handling a 😫😭 return from maternity leave👇 Returning from maternity leave can be a challenging time especially if your manager isn’t understanding and supportive. Your instinctive reaction may be to become defensive and criticise them for not being supportive which is a completely understandable reaction. I would avoid doing this and instead I would recommend having a really open and honest conversation with them so you can regain control using these 4️⃣ steps: 1️⃣ It may seem counterintuitive but try to show understanding of their perspective and why they’re frustrated. When we acknowledge someone else’s perspective they will be more open to hearing ours. 2️⃣ If they question your commitment be honest about that being difficult to hear and again acknowledge their perspective. For example: “That’s very difficult to hear. I can also understand why you would question that as before I had children I probably would’ve thought the same” 3️⃣ Spell out how you anticipate the next few months looking and own it. By spelling it out you remove the uncertainty. People respond better to certainty. 4️⃣ Ask for what you need- their support and understanding. This could sound like: “I recognise this is frustrating for you but I would greatly appreciate your support and understanding” 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation.
