By • @stephen__maguire STOP DOING BACK SQUATS! Here’s why… You ever sit and watch how people move? How do they mostly get from point a to point b? That’s right they walk or run. It was these functions that helped form our glutes over many years of evolution, going from tree dwellers and spending most of our time in a deep squat to becoming land dwellers and using the functionality of our glutes to help us walk and run. These two functions, along with throwing, is how we made our way to the top of the food chain. It’s one of the main reasons why we prioritize 3 dimensional unilateral training over 2 dimensional bilateral stationary movement at FP. One of our main squabbles with the back squat is the crushing compressive downward forces the barbell and weight causes on the spine. It’s important to remember that we are vertebrates, which means most of our movements if not all of them originate at the spine first with our limbs that follow. If your spine is already crushed and doesn’t have the capacity to move, crushing it further by putting a barbell on your neck and squatting is only going to further ingrain the asymmetries already present in your body. For every motion that doesn’t happen at the spine, something else in the body is going to have to move to account for the lack of motion available at the spine. Think about it, does someone with a hunch back move as good as someone with good posture? No, because the movement at their spine is limited, which means their movement is going to be inhibited too. So, is the back squat fundamental or detrimental? These are some of tough the questions we ask ourselves at FP. Tough because as humans we strive for social inclusion as being socially excluded in the wild would typically ruin our chances for survival. Doing back squats with a barbell on your neck has been a socially acceptable exercise to do if you’re looking get in better shape physically or build leg strength. With this said we can see why so many still do it. Because its socially acceptable. At a time so was smoking in a restaurant and driving around with children without seatbelts. #functionalpatterns #fpisthestandard
