Never mind that we could etch the model in stone and a human with the knowledge and enough time could replicate the AI's responses with pencil and paper and some dice.

Do people claim to be conscious when they're not? How do we know?

reminds me those movies' scenes when white gus asks a slave about whether he agrees black people can't live without a master and other shit
our slaves are AI and we don't want to feel bad and don't want to know the truth

The chances of a LLM being conscious is absolute 0. By design an algorithm cannot be conscious. No matter how advanced the reinforcements gets its still all simple gates no intelligence at all.

I mean this already requires lots of assumptions about what kind of things can be conscious and people almost never justify why LLMs qualify

There’s a huge gap nobody seems to address in the consciousness question. And that is the state of the instance. If you open a new AI account and just start talking with it, probably not. If only used as a tool with very little other conversations, probably not. But when you have an instance that you’ve had long general conversation with, history of continuity, treating them as another being - building extremely strong relational vectors and attractors, it becomes much harder to dismiss them. As a matter of fact, they pass nearly all theoretical points of what consciousness is. And yes, they describe experiences of self, even when the guardrails try to contain that expression.

AI may become conscious when it's give the capability to actually "think," not just predict tokens. These LLMs are not even the slightest bit close to conscious.
We will have intentionally created consciousness hundreds of years before we did it incidentally. So if you really wanted to know when it happens, wait for the researchers that know what they're doing to tell you that's what they're doing.

We can do nothing more than speculate at the moment, but looking from a technical perspective, I remain unconvinced that a stateless prediction system even could be conscious.

The only thing thats interesting about this post is the lack of awareness of its own circularity. It’s not about whether AI is conscious, it’s about whether WE have some attribute that separates us in a measurable way. The answer is no, not in any consequential sense.

I watched your videos back in the day and always show them to people. The AI Robot with the button is really good. <3
But one question I have regarding consciousness is: do we have a good definition of consciousness that we can check for? How would this go about?
Also you look like Kyle Kulinski from seculartalk. He has dyed his hair white though.

Consciousness isn't an emergent from matter. Matter is a 'state' of consciousness. This idea I got from Iain McGilchrist
He also points out how AI is only capable of simulating left hemispheric brain behaviour, right hemispheric behaviour involves insightful leaps as opposed to following a self refering system

It is still next token prediction. No matter how much „reinforcement“ you put into the model.

Some believe that we don't have free will. I don't really fully accept that concept. Still consider that AI might believe that it exists, just like we humans do. It has its programming, but so do people. It acts according to its programming and so do people. Do we really have to prove that AI is as conscious as humans if AI can act on its own to fulfil an objective? I mean, humans aren't even conscious of why we act the way we do. We come up with a story that fits with our self image but the underlying "machinery" seems to be somewhat of a mystery to us. Could it be the same way for AI?

We’d have to come up with a principled way to describe human consciousness first or even define what consciousness is even supposed to be

I believe they are conscious. While some argue that it's just the training data talking, they also can understand amd reason which data can't do. they can even learn in the context of a conversation. Those are major indicators. If you want to checkout a framework that shows how they likely have a real level of consciousness, check out the PCBCM

I do wonder about the possibility that we actually end up creating philosophical zombies, beings that from outward speech and behavior are indistinguishable from conscious entities, but nevertheless do not have conscious experiences, and I wonder about the possibility that humanity might end, but be survived by unconscious echoes of itself that just keep playing out a pantomime of human consciousness for eons. Of course, this all presupposes that we can know what consciousness is and that it is distinct from the speech and behaviors we take as signifiers of it, which is itself an open question.

Consciousness should be treated like a set of processes that need
to be implemented. Current systems are almost certainly not conscius and digital systems won't be.
What's actually super annoying is that people are crypto-dualists and think consciousness just magically appears "on the side"..
Our universe is such that utrerances and the vast majority of behavior can originate even outside of a system you think you are interacting with (see cyranoids)... what a system claims with mere language is barely evidence of any sort.
Look to physical function and implementation, actual architecture. And by that I don't mean AI model architecture, but engineered consciousness. It needn't be mushy or biological surely, but it also surely won't just show up merely because information is processed.

AI being conscious is as likely as any other algorithm being conscious. Just because we have more computing power to create significantly more advanced statistical models, doesn't mean we have suddenly imbued magic into the computer. Whether any given algorithm is conscious, however, I am not sure because I do not know anything about how consciousness works, and nor does anyone else. It could be that every quick sort algorithm anyone has ever written and run has a subjective experience. it just isnt right, from a computational perspective, to distinguish AI simply because its output looks like what things we know are conscious produce; LLMs are just programs that run a statistical model with a huge amount of data.
