I grew up with an abusive father and a mother that chose to protect herself rather than me. In latter years I tried to protect my mother as she was dying from cancer. I despised my father, but I was left with the task by my brothers and sister to look after him. I never treated him with disrespect, but he would always treat me like an ignorant child even though I achieved 15 times what he did in his entire sad, angry, life. When I walked away to keep my sanity he made up stories to defame me to family or anyone else that would listen to him. He even rang the Police and told them that I was threatening my own life. That was an interesting conversation when I got blocked in by police car in a supermarket carpark. Kindness is fine, but you realise that being kind can also come with consequences that you don't deserve.
