@abcnewsaus: It's an age old debate: is it called football or soccer? While the term 'soccer' is predominantly used in countries with their own versions of football, like Australia, purists say the round-ball sport should be known as 'football'. The term soccer dates back to the 1800s, when the rules of rugby and football became formalised. Students at English boarding schools, predominantly Oxford, were in the habit of shortening words and adding '-er' to the end of them. So the round ball sport known then as 'Association Football' became 'Assoccer' and eventually just soccer. While the term dropped away in the UK, soccer became associated with an Americanisation of the sport in the 1980s, and now the two names are the source of fierce debate.
