Two brothers used their family's 1930s potato farm to build an organic fry company that supports local farmers. Zack and Colt Troyer's grandfather and his brothers began growing potatoes in Erie County, Pennsylvania, in the late 1930s. The family's chip company was sold before the brothers could join it, so in 2024 they started Folkland Foods. The brothers grew up farming conventional potatoes, which are grown with synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Their father began converting acres to organic in 2018, and land must go three years without most synthetic chemicals before it can be certified. They had 140 certified organic acres in 2025 and plan to transition 1,500. The family says it uses regenerative practices, which are farming methods meant to rebuild soil health, and has seen the organic matter in its soil increase. Folkland buys organic potatoes from other farms under contract and plans to add more in the region. Co-founder Colt Troyer says he has watched many farms in his county disappear, and the family doesn't want to gobble up acres for itself. The fries are made in a factory on the family farm, built with help from a $3 million state grant. The company says it uses potatoes that would otherwise be thrown out, and returns unusable waste to the land. The fries are certified organic, seed oil free and made with a short list of kitchen ingredients. The company calls it the cleanest ingredient list in fries, and the factory is expected to create up to 50 local jobs. Find the companies doing it right.
